Lady of the Snows
The parish church for our Lady of the Snows was built in the Gothic Mudéjar style with heavy fortifications. The more recent church was built in the 1970s next to the old one.
The Virgen de las Nieves Fiesta is organised by the Festivals Committee to honour the patron saint of Calpe, the Virgen de las Nieves
The walls light up!
During the summer months, the walls are all lit up. Originally built to guard against the pirates that would raid towns along the Costa Blanca in the 18th century, they are great backdrops to the festivities!
The Fiestas of Calpe
Fiestas in Calpe are important celebrations in the Calendar of Events in Calpe – they symbolise religious festivals, the rich history of the area & Patron Saints of the town.
Calpe Festivals in March
Tradition has it that Valencian Carpenters spring-cleaned their workshops on the Feast Day of Saint Joseph the Carpenter.
They gathered all the woodcuttings and woodchips and made a bonfire of them on the streets outside their workshops.
In the 18th century, as the fiesta became more popular the citizens made models of personalities they wanted to deride and hung them in the streets.
The Carpenters took to shaping their woodcuts into the image of Town Councillors or people in the public eye that they wanted to complain about. This has become a tradition all over Valencia and the local Town Councillors take it in good heart when they are criticised.
Lady of the Forsaken
Virgen de los desamparados
The day before the Fallas the Falleros process through the Towns and make an offering to Virgen de los Desemparados, the Patron Saint of the Valencia region, Calpe and Alicante included.
Similar to the larger celebrations in the capital, Valencia, Calpe has it’s own street procession and church services for the patron saint.
